I have a model that I created some years ago, and I want to make it 3d printable. Usually I make my 3d print models in Fusion 360, but working with meshes in it can be troublesome.
When I saw that the file conversion here has the ability to convert to stp, I figured I’d give it a shot and try converting the model, but it failed. Unfortunately, the error information it spat out means very little to me, and didn’t really seem to contain any obvious indications as to what the cause might be.
I checked the documentation to see if there might be some info to help me figure out what the issue might be, but it seems the section is empty at present.
As such, I figure I need to reach out for a bit of support, so came here hoping I might be able to get some more information.
The geometry of the model isn’t all that complex, but it is made up of quite a lot of objects/bodies. I uploaded it as an obj file, and was hoping to convert to .stp as that format is much easier to work with in Fusion.
Is there any information around that outlines kind of best practices, or limitations of what it’s able to work with or such? (Like do all objects have to be manifold solids, or can it only process single body objects etc.)
Failing that, is there a preferred place/method (apart from here) to reach out for support with this kind of thing?
Hello @welbot, and welcome to our community!
I’ve passed this along internally, and we will provide more information as soon as it becomes available.
Thanks!
Hello again @welbot,
After confirming internally, I’d like to help clarify the use of the conversion polytrons such as CAD to 3D
and 3D File Conversion
.
The 3D File Conversion
polytron is designed to convert polygon data to other polygon-based formats. For example and OBJ to an FBX or FBX to USD.
The CAD to 3D
polytron converts CAD data to a polygon-based format. For example STP to FBX. or SLDASM to USD.
Unfortnately, it is not currently possible to convert polygon-based formats into CAD.
For support and questions, you are more than welcome to ask them here. We also have a Discord server where you ask questions as well.
Thanks!
Hi Pixby!
Thanks for confirming. I guess I just assumed that since the option was there for the output that it would work. Good to know it only works one way for future stuff.
Thanks @welbot!
Apologies for the confusion with the options. We are looking into how we can clarify them going forward.
Thanks again!
